SYNOPSIS:
SEPTEMBER 30, 1954
FRONT PAGE
Four New Teachers Join Faculty
Dominic Formica, Dr. Roger Heppel, Thomas Peiffer and Miss Joyce Tyson were new to the school. Did you contribute to making their first experiences at Davis pleasant or a "living hell"? "Living hell" is meant in the context of our rather sedate high school days as compared to the turbulent times which have followed. How many of you made Mr. Formica nervous in the co-pilot seat of his driver-training courses? What the heck did Dr. Heppel teach? Were Mr. Peiffer and Miss Tyson happy with our new purple gym suits - were we? Were we vintage dodge-ball players in advance of the tv and movie stars of today?
Goldman Heads 1954 Force of Marshals
Judy Goldman was chosen to be the head Marshal with Lieutenant Marshals Cynthia Blunt, Martha Cohen, Toni Marriot and Nancy Schloss. The most important function of this organization was to check the girl's lockers before classes each morning. Imagine what these Marshals would have been looking for in today's lockers.
D.S. Accepts Twenty Members;
'Suspect,' Heiress' To Be Given
D.S. stands for Dramatic Society - even then we were learning to speak in pneumonics.
Stuart Chosen Drum Majorette
Ellen Stuart was chosen to lead the band. The article says she was a junior and that it was her last year at Davis. How did she escape the torture of the senior year? Did she become a model as she thought she might?EDITORIAL/FEATURE PAGE Wanted - One New High School
Davis and Edison were considered to be too small to accommodate the onslaught of new students enrolled in the lower grades. There was a lot of clamor for a new school. Wonder when our building physically died as our school and took on a new purpose. It will continue to stand as a school in our memories.
Posh Purple Pants! Propaganda
Appears for Gay Gym Togs!!
The secret was let out - Maroonium in a saggy baggy look. Didn't we just love to change to those duds for gym class? Just like in the Army - no decision necessary on what to wear. Remember when we could use the word "gay" in a headline like the one above and not worry about offending any one?
Brothers and Sisters Bemoan Hard Fate - Down with Elders
by Sylvia Stempel
Sylvia wrote about her trying role as kid sister to her older sister. Siblings sometimes fight like cats or dogs but defend each other to the outside world of parents and others.
Spinning with Judy by Judy Anderson
Judy talked about the return to Rosemary Clooney - now we have Bette Midler singing the Rosemary Clooney songs. Our music will last forever.
Cinemantics by Mike Rosenthal
Mike reviewed the latest Martin and Lewis movie - "Living It Up". Yes, Jerry Lewis is still around, though somewhat puffy, and fighting for his Kids. DVD's of the Dean Martin show are being promoted by Regis Philbin. The two will be around forever.
The Mike-rophone by Mike Cohen
Comments on the Human Female
This was a risque description of a female describing hair, lipstick and nail polish. Do you really believe the school administration would have allowed any risqué article?
The Inquiring Photographer
by Helen Halpern and Dave Klatzko
Helen and Dave interviewed incoming sophomores, who they compared to paramecia. New school systems throw ninth graders into the high schools - even more of an age discrepancy within the school. Imagine, bullying was present back in our day and is still a source of problems in the school systems.
SPORTS PAGE Spotlight on Sports by Mike Zucker
Mike asked us to buy a G.O. ticket for $4.00 which covered all sporting events. Today it would be $4.00 for each event.
Maroon Gridmen Prime for Pelham Contest Saturday
Team Features "Split-T" Attack
Away Game at Memorial Field
by Andy Frank
The author's claim to fame was his sports prowess at Nichols Junior High when in a gym period game he tried to block a pass by the quarterback, caught the ball to his surprise and ran for a touchdown to the surprise of everyone. True story.
Rifle Club Starts the Year
Even in those days the National Rifle Association was lobbying for new recruits at the high school level.
Some of the Ads on the Third Page:
Fifth Ave. Valet - $145 for a tuxedo now - what was it back then?
Sal De Vito Shoe Repairing - cents versus dollars today
Town Fotoshop and Camera Craft Inc. - they would be handling cell phones today BACK PAGE Wikler and Docherty Head '55 Yearbook
Anne Wikler and Elizabeth Docherty, respectively, editor-in-chief and business manager, produced a book that is cherished to this day.
H.R. Advisers Choose Vogely
Betty Vogely, President, and Betsy Beilenson, Secretary, were chosen to head up the Home Room Advisors. Miss Grace Lewis, bless her heart, chose H.R. based on character, dependability, honesty and leadership.
Charles H. Altschuler Celebrates 25th Year
Like our current national leaders, "Uncle Charlie" went to Yale. Wonder whether he would have operated a plane or a swift boat during the Viet Nam War.
Some of the Ads on the Third Page:
Kazan's Flower Shops - were roses a dollar a dozen?
Lincoln Fruit Market - similar to a market where one learned as a newbie worker that there were 13 ounces in a pound for delivered goods
Weisberger's - Moxees shoes for $5.95 or $6.95
SOME NATIONAL NEWS FOR SEPTEMBER, 1954September 3 - The last new episode of the Lone Ranger was aired on radio after 2,956 episodes over a period of 21 years - when we had to imagine what the actors looked like
September 11 - First Miss America Pageant broadcast on television - black and white pictures of white bathing suits
September 14 - USSR Tests Nuclear Weapon - and we can't find it now
September 24 - Temple of Mithras found in London - they had to go down deep on those escalators
September 30 - USS Nautilus, 1st atomic-powered vessel (submarine), commissioned by the US Navy - maybe that is where Bin Laden is hiding
