__We spoke, saw and heard NO evil.
Growing up in Mt. Vernon in the 40's and 50's was idyllic......a safe, secure and
wonderful place to come of age.
We walked to and from elementary and Junior High School 4 times a day - sometimes
a 20 minute walk each way - home for lunch.
Saturday afternoon (all afternoon) Loew's and Proctor's provided us with 6 cartoons, a cliff-hanger serial, 2 feature films and the newsreel all for $.25.
Memorial and Baker Fields were our green spaces - complete with red clay tennis courts and ball fields.
Football games at A. B. Davis High School on Saturdays were spirited and important events.
Pop Phillip's Latin classroom had that back door that opened onto the girls gym outdoor staircase that led to the playing fields.....and, oh, those chic green or was it blue gym suits that we wore.....Pop's back door was always open for comments.
Andy's (Albanese) and Annabelle's in Eastchester/Tuckahoe were homes away from home.....our first tastes of pizza and beer.
House parties where we danced to 78 and 45 rpms of Patti Page, Nat "King" Cole, Jo Stafford, Eddie Fisher, Spike Jones, the big sounds of Glenn Miller and Stan Kenton, Johnny Ray.
And for those big nights and proms we frequented The Log Cabin, Maxl's, the Post Lodge, Glen Island Casino, Bill Rieber's.....friends with cars and those first alcoholic beverages (evil!) It was a good time..... Some of our senses still work....(see photo) We remember it well!

I have a recipe in the Mount Vernon Heritage Cookbook. My son Tommy had a restaurant in Mount Vernon in 1989 or thereabouts. He passed away in 1999 and I had a cooking class at the Doles Center in his memory. We called it Tommy's Kitchen. You will see a recipe there called "Tommy's Favorite Swiss Steak."
